Sometimes, I just want some good ol' American food with a twist. There are other times when I want a good ol' drink to go along with my food. Jackson's Food + Drink offers exactly that: food and drink. The restaurant has a casual and relaxed atmosphere with a bit of urban sophistication. Scott Cooper is the owner and chef of Jackson's Food + Drink. Self taught, Cooper started Jackson's Village Bistro in Hermosa Beach before expanding to its new spot in El Segundo. The food...well...see for yourself (I was lucky enough to have a five-course tasting menu with drink pairing)!

LAMB SAUSAGE FLATBREAD PIZZA
Caramelized Onions, Ricotta and Feta Cheeses, Fresh Mint, Za'Tar
PAIRING: Mama's Little Yella Pill
This dish was inspired from a beer-sausage dinner. The meat is local from Manhattan Meat.

AHI SASHIMI SALAD
Daikon Sprouts, Toasted Sesame Seeds, Crispy Wontons, Wasabi Vinaigrette
PAIRING: Tabla de Sumar Albarino, Spain
This dish is made to embody sushi without the rice.

MISO BLACK COD (FRESH, WILD CAUGHT)
Ginger-Buerre Blanc, Sweet Soy Drizzle, Cucumber Salad and Jasmine Rice
PAIRING: Tabla de Sumar Albarino, Spain
This was my favorite dish of the night. The black cod was succulent with a a hint of sweetness from the soy drizzle.

PORT BRAISED BONELESS BEEF SHORT RIBS
Roasted Root Vegetables, Parsnip Mashed Potatoes, Horseradish Cream Sauce
PAIRING: "Poseiden" Pinot Noir, Carneros
This dish required at least 1.5 hours of roasting for the root vegetables to render its sweetness.

JACKSON'S UPSIDE-DOWN BLACKBERRY PIE
Served Warm with Creme Anglaise, Vanilla Ice Cream
PAIRING: French Press Coffee
The pastry is from a Julia Child recipe and the ice cream is from Fosselmans. To make this dessert, they cooked the pastry and the filling separately and flipped it upside down to hold its shape while keeping it warm.

Jackson's Food + Drink is a great option if you just need to unwind a bit with a drink and something to nibble on. The place offers a lovely patio area in the back. If that doesn't float your boat, you can always opt to eat indoors or grab a drink at the bar. The place is located in a plaza and free parking is available which is a plus. In the meantime, drinks anyone?
